“Keep your overheard low and lean for as long as you can, because one day If you do things right, that will change.”
That amazing business advice was given to me by our client at our North Ranch Remodel, four years ago, when our first borns were just babies. Fast forward four years and we’re sitting in their Westlake Village, California family home we’ve just about finished and those words couldn’t ring more true.
Sunday, we invited you in for our first ever video tour of our North Ranch Remodel. Thank you all so much for the incredible outpouring of support, praises, questions and comments. It’s been so fun to be able to show you the house in it’s entirety! But as much as we love a video tour, sometimes we just wanna stare at each moment for a while.
To kick off our photo reveal, we’re bringing you right inside the grand entry and adjoining formal dining room. Because this is the very first thing you see when you walk in the house (or even open the front door), our client really wanted it to make a statement, even in the relatively small space. To start, we immediately changed out the chandelier to something more dimensional and interesting. It instantly modernized the space while still feeling true to the bones of the home. To help make the small(ish) space feel more grand, we sourced the chunkiest table we could fit in the space. By adding textured shaggy poufs, we softened the hard lines without watering down the design. The final detail, which may be my favorite in the whole house), was the conversation piece with the hand chair paired with a vintage rug that can handle the high traffic area. I love how the final design offers tons of function (drop space, seating for putting shoes on or off, giant hands to catch a purse – the usual).
Almost each and every piece in this space was sourced when we were at Las Vegas Market earlier this year. That means most of these items aren’t available for retail purchase. We had flagged them at our to-the-trade vendors, knowing we’d want to use them in a future project. This is why attending market is SO important as a designer. Go and find the things you really love and want to use someday for a client. I really feel that these unusual pieces made this project what it is.
Once you step foot in the entry, your eye is immediately drawn straight through to the dining room. Honestly, The dining room is probably got the biggest transformation in the home, because it looks completely different than when we walked in. To start, we stripped the previous two toned trellis wallpaper that hung before, removed an oversized wood chandelier and painted the door from the dining room to kitchen black to give it some polish and make a bold statement.
Furnishing the entire space was a major task – they have a large family, so the table needed to comfortably fit 8-10 people. The table and chairs are really the focal point in the room. We upholstered the chairs in a high-performance fabric so they didn’t have to stress about the white upholstery. Each piece adds such a sculptural and timeless layer to the space. The amazing new light fixture added the funk-factor the husband was looking for, but the darker moodier charcoal grasscloth wallpaper kept it sophisticated. Finally, we polished off the space with amazing designer fabric custom window treatments. These items really made the room come to life.
I love all the many materials and textures we layered in to each space. The concrete dining table, brass chair legs, vinyl wallpaper for easy cleaning, wool poufs – they all elevate the space individually and as a whole.
